Cast Iron Margherita Pizza with Burrata

What this post is NOT ABOUT:

…homemade pizza sauce

…homemade pizza dough

…homegrown basil or tomatoes….

Cast Iron Margherita Pizza with Burrata

What this post IS ABOUT:

…homemade pizza prepared in a cast-iron skillet from store-bought ingredients

MY GOAL:

To share my SIMPLE METHOD for making pizza in a cast iron skillet; a method resulting in the most perfectly golden crispy crust. (Ohh, and to share my love of cheese. 🙂  I guess that’s two goals. 😉 )

Cast Iron Margherita Pizza with Burrata

INGREDIENTS FOR CAST IRON MARGHERITA PIZZA WITH BURRATA:

  • 1 lb. dough (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1/4 cup of olive oil
  • 1/2 cup of pizza sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • 12 oz. shredded low-moisture mozzarella
  • 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
  • Fresh basil leaves
  • 4 oz. Burrata
  • Parmigiano-reggiano cheese, grated
  • Salt & black pepper

Cast Iron Margherita Pizza with Burrata

INSTRUCTIONS:

Preheat oven to 450 F.

Heat a 12-inch skillet on the stovetop over medium heat until hot.

In the meantime, roll or stretch pizza dough into a 14-inch circle.

Once the pan is ready, remove from the stove and add a nice drizzle of olive oil. Using a paper towel, being very careful, spread the oil to cover the bottom and up the side of the pan.

Carefully transfer the dough to the pan, pressing the dough up the edge.

Spread the sauce over the dough making sure to go all the way to the edge.

Top with mozzarella and sliced tomato. Season with salt and pepper.

Brush remaining olive oil around the edge of the pizza.

Bake on the bottom rack for 12 – 15 minutes until edge is crispy and golden. Remove the pizza and turn off the oven.

Tear burrata into small chunks and place all over the top.

Place back in the oven for about a minute for the burrata to melt.

Remove and top with fresh basil, Parm, salt and pepper.

Let rest in the pan for about 5 minutes until everything sets and cuts easily.

I first tried pizza in the cast iron a few years ago and it was life-changing. It makes for the BEST crust. Yours looks amazing – melted burrata is maybe one of my favorite things ever!

I’ve been doing this with sourdough pizza and I love the results! Those tomatoes look so juicy and perfect for topping this pizza. I’ve gotta grab some burrata! Thank you for your inspiration Annie!

Huh. I’ve never used purchased pizza dough, but this year I’ve been learning to slow down and allow compromises. Not because of the pandemic, because of having had hand trouble for the last while. Recovering from surgeries now. I have discovered some wonderful red sauces, so why not pizza dough?!!! Plus, I love everything cooked in a cast iron skillet!
