Cantaloupe Orange Granita

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

Cantaloupe Orange Granita is the best most refreshing answer to the test that many of us are facing these days……..

The heat!

Are your lawns crunchy? Is your hair frizzy? Do people congregate around your open freezer door?

Well, I say no more.

And although this granita won’t cure crispy grass and fuzzy heads, it will help you to look at them with more loving eyes.

I got your back, my friends.

Cantaloupe Orange Granita ciaochowbambina.com

Sometimes we need more than just chilled fruit to munch on (though that is pleasant in its own right). We need more than a tall glass of freshly squeezed pulp-y orange juice (though most days that’s a luxury). Nope, sometimes we just need more.

We need ice.

Flavored ice.

Ice chips.

Shaved ice.

Italian ice.

Slushied fruity ice.

Granita.

Cantaloupe Orange Granita.

Whatever you want to call it…just don’t call me late to the party when it’s being served!

It doesn’t get simpler than my Cantaloupe Orange Granita.

Pack your blender with cubed cantaloupe, sugar, orange juice and water. Blend until the cantaloupe is pulverized and you have what appears to be cantaloupe juice. Pour the liquid in a 13×9 baking dish. Place in the freezer (yes, that same freezer that hopefully hasn’t lost all its cool due to the family gatherings happening there). Check on the mixture every hour or so for the first couple hours. And by check, I mean, scrape the dickens out of it with your favorite scraping utensil – a fork. After a good 4 hours or so, your treat should be ready.

I made mine in the evening and let it set overnight. This way, I woke to a gorgeous and refreshing breakfast that started my day on the perfect note.

Speaking of perfect notes…you might want to check out my Black Grape & Ginger Granita while you’re here…

Melon and citrus are a match made in heaven – add a freezer – and you’ve got yourself an answer to your frizzy haired prayers.

Love this granita! And your photos. OMG! Tell the truth…you are a professional food photogrpaher for Saveur, right? This recipe has me thinking about all sorts of delicious possibilities, like watermelon granita, strawberry granita, kiwi granita. Our CSA will have cantaloupes soon and this is the first thing I’m making with them 🙂

Granita always reminds me of Taormina, our first stop in Italy before embarking on a semester abroad. We were only there for a few days, but I remember having the most wonderful granita and oh my, the oranges were like nothing I had ever had before! Easily one of my most favorite spots in Italy! I love the cantaloupe and orange combo, Annie! And it’s SO perfect for those hot summer days! Cool, refreshing, easy to make – just perfect!

Oh myyyy – I’ve never been to Taormina but it needs to go on the list! It is incredible how mammoth the citrus in Italy is! This is a refreshing treat especially for these overly-balmy days! Thank you, friend!! 🙂

I always knew you had my back! Also, I still maintain my belief that this perfectly summery granita can and will cure crispy grass and fuzzy heads. 😉 I’ve got to at least try it, right? Hehe. My friend, as always, I’m delighted by the visual feast that is your photography. <3 I love that you had this for breakfast. Now, how about ya ship some over to me? Think it'll make it? 😉 Have a happy weekend full of lots of fun, Annie. xo Pinned!

The shipping begins!! I dig your beliefs and I will join you! Maybe that’s all that’s been missing for me…a stronger belief in the power of the granita over crispy grass and fuzzy heads!! Have a beautiful weekend, my dear! Thanks for the pin! xo

Hahaha.. Ummm how did you know I have been hanging out with my head in the freezer? If I could shrink myself I’d put my whole self in there! Since I cant.. and walk in coolers are ridiculously expensive, I’m thinking I NEED a few gallons of this fabulous Cantaloupe Orange Granita in my life! I love cantaloupe SO much, so adding a bit of citrus and turning it into a granita is definitely the answer to my prayers, Annie! This looks perfect and the color is gorgeous! Love it! Pinned!
