Spicy Calabrian Sub

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This Spicy Calabrian Sub, packed with mouth-watering ingredients, comes together quickly and is the perfect ‘sangwich’ for moments when only delicious will do!

Spicy Calabrian Sub

Dom and I popped out to look at some stone for a walkway that we were installing. Unfortunately, the supply store didn’t have what we wanted but it dawned on us that we weren’t too far from our favorite local Italian specialty shop; making our voyage (still) worth the trip! So off we went to Vince’s Gourmet Imports.

We can never leave Vince’s without a cartful…

Pastas, cheeses, Italian meats, dolce…you name it – we’re weak.

Spicy Calabrian Sub

While waiting for the deli attendant to package up our dinner, arancini and Utica greens…my eye landed on their sandwich board.

Of course the sub that spoke to me first was the Calabrian.

Made with traditional Calabrian ingredients, those that I’m sure my ancestors enjoyed with the same passion that I do today, there was no doubt we’d be leaving that little store with even more items toppling our already brimming cart.

INGREDIENTS FOR OUR SPICY CALABRIAN SUB:

  • Hot sopressata (you can substitute with mild sopressata or an alternate cured Italian meat)
  • Fresh mozzarella
  • Muffuletta mix*
  • Roasted red peppers
  • Hot red peppers (feel free to stop at the roasted peppers if spicy is not your thing)
  • Sub rolls
  • salt & pepper
  • Italian vinaigrette

Spicy Calabrian Sub

NOT FAMILIAR WITH MUFFULETTA MIX?

It’s a savory blend of chopped olives, peppers, cauliflower, celery and carrots.

A perfect complement to Italian meats and cheeses.

We went with the mild mix, although muffuletta prepared with hot peppers is equally exciting.

INSTRUCTIONS:

PREP: Split the rolls apart and pile it on!

BUILD THAT SUB: Layer meats, cheese, red peppers, muffuletta mix, salt, pepper and a drizzle of Italian vinaigrette.

SERVE: Serve whole or cut in half. Complement with chips or taralli (a southern Italian crunchy snack)

This sub looks so colorful and the flavor combo is amazing. I never had a Muffuletta on my sub. Sounds delish, adding it to my grocery list.

That’s fabulous! And I love spicy. Are tranali the little circle things next to the sandwich?

Love this sandwich. But also I was happy to see the Taralli. Not remembering the exact name for these little cracker-like munchies, now I see the name remembering when I was in Italy, harvesting grapes. Picture this: Perfect day under blue skies, cutting grapes opposite a little man belting out Italian operetta while little robust grandmothers brought espresso’s and TARALLI out to the harvesters to sip, eat and enjoy. One of the most memorable days of my life.
Now I must make a batch of TARALLI.
Love your website and everything Italian
