Cause you got to have friends…

A number of years ago I was part of a wonderful book club. A bunch of ladies from the neighborhood got together once a month to discuss a favorite book. As a nod to our neighborhood, Fox Chapel, we called ourselves, The Foxy Ladies. Now, I’d like to tell you that each time we met, we were prepared with specific rules for the group, focused discussion points, and formal etiquette…um, no. That was not exactly how we rolled.

Did we read and discuss the book? Yes. To great length? Not always. Did we eat delicious food and drink nice wine? Yes. Did we get off track and discuss the happenings of our families and current events? Yes. Was the best part of our book club the opportunity to jump off a literary diving board into a pool of real life and be reminded that real things happen and we have a safe place to process? Yes.

There was nothing rigid about our time together. We did, however, create a formula for care – for the kind of support that only friends can give.

A most touching example of this, for me, came in the form of a turquoise, book shaped, locket.

During the time of Big Dom’s Great Adventure, my dear friends found a little slice of time to surprise me with a sweet little gathering. They presented me with one of the most special gifts I have ever received.

This beautiful little locket, in the shape of a book, tells so many stories…

It holds more messages of love and friendship than any book we ever read together.

Now that is saying something!

It’s pretty likely we had a spicy little appetizer with a cool, refreshing drink on that warm summer night…

Taco Dip was a favorite among the Ladies…
