Lake Placid Pub & Brewery
While in Lake Placid, we stopped at one of our favorite, newly expanded, microbreweries to enjoy ourselves a brew. While Nick was hopping around town – Chels, Dom, and I took a moment to enjoy some late summer sunshine and soak up the beautiful views of Mirror Lake. Our cold ones and conversation led me to reminisce about a special lady who also enjoyed those very same things.
My Mema was one awesome lady. She had an independent spirit that was ahead of her time and was funny in a Lucille Ball kinda way. Most afternoons, as she was finishing up her General Hospital, she would pour herself a cold one in her coffee cup, grab her ‘paper’ (the National Enquirer) and delight in a ritual that began centuries before she was born. Since she only had one beer, it led me to believe she understood the possible health benefits associated with having just one-a-day. I don’t recall Mema being fussy about her beer… her Romano and Parmigiano, maybe, but not her beer.
I wish I could sit with her now and chat over a ‘cup of beer’ and some of her homemade peanut brittle…
Perched on the third floor balcony with our birds-eye view, we each enjoyed an ale that suited our individual tastes. Chels had the Moose Island Ale, which is light golden in color with very low bitterness and a clean-crisp flavor; I had the 46’er Pale Ale which is copper in color and hoppy, yet very smooth; and Dom had the Ubu Ale, their famous English-style strong ale which is deep-garnet red in color and features dark fruit and roasted malt flavors, with a slightly bitter finish. Unfortunately, they were not served in coffee cups, but they tasted great just the same.
We lingered there for a short while…
You know when you’re nearing the end of something special, all you want to do is soak it up, take it in, and store it…well, that was this moment. We knew we were lucky to have had such a beautiful summer, and we were blessed to be enjoying this day, together. We let the storing begin!
What special memories are you storing up?
Ciao!

Love the way she would refer to it as her “afternoon cocktail.”
Miss her laugh, miss her sense of humor and miss her joyful presence.
Thanks for the memories.
Love you!!!
