So I have eaten my fair share of chocolate and Wavy Lay’s these past few months (yes, sometimes right out of the bag… hey, don’t judge me!); I have sat in the place of past events; I have pondered our parenting styles and strategies; I have reminisced about tadpoles and story-time. I have felt every single moment, and though I think these acts have been necessary for my own psychological transition, it is now time to build on these wonderful memories by enjoying today and looking forward to tomorrow…and a carrot stick or two couldn’t hurt. I have cried my fair share of tears and now (who am I kidding – that’s never going to change – I’ve been a “feeler” since Day 1) and now…I am excited to see what is next for each of the five of us!
We bid Lucy adieu about a month ago in California, dropped Nicholas off last week for his Freshmen Orientation, and delivered Chelsea to her final dorm room to begin her senior year two days ago. It’s like yesterday we waved goodbye to each of our five year old cutie pies as they boarded the tiny school bus for their little dress-rehearsal ride to kindergarten. Where did it go? Where does time go?
Speaking of time, tomorrow is my birthday and to celebrate Dominick and I are going for a hike. A very meaningful hike. I’m excited because I think we have found an activity that will help bridge these two phases of our life in a symbolic way. Hiking is a challenge that can mirror the magnitude, the thoughtful processes, the unpredictability, and the sense of accomplishment that come from living through any of life’s major missions…missions like raising a family or maneuvering through an empty nest.
We hope to climb to the summits of each of the 46 major peaks of the Adirondacks ultimately making us members of the Forty-Sixers Club, and tomorrow we begin our journey. This goal will take a very long time and lots of other things too!! Endurance, mental strength, a sense of humor, keen sense of observation, sturdy shoes, lots of water, bug spray, stashed granola bars, etc… (See – just like parenting!)
So on these mountains, where bears reside and evergreens flourish, like in life, we will accept the challenges and relish in the rewards. Happily.
Happy Labor Day!
Ciao!
