I recently woke in the early-early morning to the musical stylings of a rackety bird perched nearby. Making his voice heard – I mean really heard, you would think he was rehearsing his opera debut. This was no flitty birdsong, no – this was an aria di furia – a dramatic, intense, piercing anthem. Barely stopping for air, this skilled tenor, likely an Eastern Screech Owl, had his mind set on being heard.
So, I was up. What to do? What to do at 3:30 in the AM? Oh, think about birds, I guess.
The last time birds made an impression on me was a few years back while visiting Portland, Maine. We had been to Portland before, in the summer, but this was our first time visiting in winter. I loved it. Loved. And in true me fashion – loved it even more in the snow than I had in the sun. An unhurried cozy vacation with views of lobster boats resting on icy carpets and sleeping gulls on snowy rooftops. No alarm clocks for these winter seabirds…
However – once stirred – there was nothing like the noise of their chatter. Early mornings on the harbor gifted us with sights of old lobster crates, sleeping cargo boats, icy piers, and gull-gossip… What a scene.
Birds. Birds. We have a symphony of birdsong at our home, especially now that it’s spring. With Red-Winged Blackbirds, Cardinals, Blue Jays, Canadian Geese, and tiny Yellow Warblers hanging out near the pond, and on the cattails, we are never at a loss for music. We could save so much on Spotify –
You know – when we think about the soundtrack of our lives, and the many stages of tunes we’ve adored, I can honestly say – birdsong, as a score, just might be my new favorite.
